NOT IN OUR HOUSE
Is a School Based Drug Intervention Program Assisted by Narcotics and Weapons Dog Detectors
Drugs in schools are a serious problem in today's society. National reports have shown in the last few years the percentage of 8th graders using illegal drugs has doubled. During that same period there was a 56% increase in drug use for 9th and 12th graders. We can all agree that these are startling statistics.
A high probability of getting caught serves as a powerful deterrent against human misbehavior. When kids know it's only a matter of time until the contraband will be discovered, a large percentage will give up trying to smuggle it into school.
Perhaps the biggest difference between law enforcement searches and our company searches is the presence of a law enforcement official at the search. When we conduct a search our findings are turned over to the school to determine what action will be taken. The case could still be turned over to law enforcement, but the primary goal is not to arrest kids. It is to keep the school environment free of dangerous contraband and safer for the kids and teachers
It is important to keep our children in school and out of the juvenile system. Certain studies have shown that Juvenile Detention Centers do not aide in the rehabilitation of our youth most of the time. But instead, they remove the student from a structured learning environment, and they allow the student to meet and collect contact information of other juvenile offenders which in turn allows them to broaden their drug connections and worse.
This program is safer for everyone. Rather than focusing on trying to catch criminals in the act it helps teach the kids, which is the purpose of a school. The program helps kids say no to peers trying to involve them with contraband. Since illegal drugs, alcohol, and weapons are involved in the majority of these offenses, dealing with this problem saves injuries as well as lives.
Part of our responsibility in our school drug awareness "NOT IN OUR HOUSE" program is to communicate with parents and school officials and the youth that was caught with illegal the substances and assisting with the intervention program between the parent , the school and the student. We work with retired law-enforcement officers that specialized in narcotics when they were on the force. Theses officers can talk straight up to the student and parent of where this path will take them without an arrest. The school will than need to decide the path they will take for the illegal act. These officers are available to the students on an as needed basis.
Types of Dogs We Use
Drug dogs in schools can be any breed, but our company prefers to use dogs that don't appear threatening to the students. We want the students to like the dog and enjoy having them visit their school. Our dogs are well trained and are certified to detect; heroin, marijuana, meth, cocaine, ecstasy. Not only are these dogs well trained for their discipline they are well trained in obedience and have earned their Canine Good Citizen certificate from a qualified trainer.
Programs Offered
To Good for Drugs
We are excited to introduce Too Good for Drugs a science-based, field-tested curriculum that generates short and long term positive results. Too Good For Drugs has been designated a Model Program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and a winner of the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association's Best Practices Award for First Place in Prevention.
Life enriching skills are at the heart of Too Good for Drugs. It is designed to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors for K-8 students by building five essential life skills:
- Goal Setting
- Decision Making
- Bonding with (Pro-Social) others
- Identifying and Managing Emotions
- Communicating Effectively
Each curriculum includes role plays, games and other interactive learning techniques designed to maintain student interest. Each level builds on earlier grade levels which enables students to learn important skills sequentially. Parents are also involved in home workouts.
"Too Good for Drugs" will be available to three school districts for the 2008-09 school year. If you would like more information please contact Kim Newman at

Narcotic Dog Search Program
With the support of a teacher or school counselor we typically use the dogs to check scents around lockers and cars in the parking lot when the students are in class. The trained narcotics dog will passively indicate by sitting or laying down when he hits on the scent of an illegal substance or weapon. We use the passive alert because it is less intrusive ongoing classes and people in the direct area
When the dog hits on a locker or car, the responsible person is brought to the area by the "support teacher", told about the dog's indication, and given a chance to explain. Then the "support teacher" inspects the site with the handler as a witness, seals any contraband found into an evidence bag, and hands it over to school officials. The school officials decide on any disciplinary action or intervention program that will be used.
This program is available to the entire school districts or grade levels, special events, and sporting events. Please contact
